Scottish Government announces 29 deaths and 2,639 covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed that 29 people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours,

The latest figures for Scotland showed that 2,639 new cases had also been identified overnight.

It brings the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 8,878.

There are currently 908 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 50 being treated in intensive care.

The total number of positive cases since the pandemic started stands at 599,837.

To date 4,275,208 people have received their first vaccination with 3,871,406 having a second jab.

It comes as around 1,000 Scots vaccine volunteers hit out after being denied access to the covid passport scheme which comes into effect on Monday.

After offering their help for the good of the country they cannot download their passport electronically unlike everyone else who received vaccines in the normal way.

And while the Scots who trialled Novavax are being issued paper vaccine certificates, they say not every venue or airline recognises them - leaving them with big problems if they want to go on holiday or attend nightclubs and big football games.
