The latest figures for Scotland showed that 1,908 new cases had also been identified overnight.

It brings the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 8,819.

There are currently 935 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 51 being treated in intensive care.

The figures follow a damning report from British MPs which says 'serious errors and delays' in the pandemic response cost lives.

A cross-party committee listed the catastrophic failures of preparation and planning in the UK Government's handling of covid-19.

Risk assessments for the government before the pandemic estimated the disease would only kill up to 100 people in the country.

In fact, the national risk register said “the likelihood of an emerging infectious disease spreading within the UK is assessed to be lower than that of a pandemic flu."

Tory MPs Greg Clark and Jeremy Hunt, who chair the cross-party committees, said: “The UK response has combined some big achievements with some big mistakes.

"It is vital to learn from both to ensure that we perform as best as we possibly can during the remainder of the pandemic and in the future."
