Scottish Government announces 25 Covid deaths and 38,770 cases in last 24 hours

A further 25 Scots have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours, the Scottish Government has confirmed.

The latest figures for Scotland showed that 38,770 new cases had also been identified overnight.

There are currently 1,996 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus, with 33 being treated in intensive care.

To date 4,441,175 people have received their first vaccination with 4,171,128 having a second jab and 3,468,504 have received a third dose or booster.

It comes as Nicola Sturgeon gives an updated statement to MSPs on the current covid situation in Scotland today.

The First Minister is expected to announce an end to all measures, including scrapping the need for using face masks.

She is scheduled to address Holyrood at around 2.20pm for 10 minutes and then take questions from all sides of the parliament.

If Sturgeon's cabinet agrees with her, then Scotland will fall in line with England who are due to lift restrictions on March 21.

The statement, which is the first in a number of weeks, comes despite numbers of the virus shooting up across the country.

The spike came at the start of the month due to the easing of rules in other parts of the UK as well as within Scotland itself.
