Scottish Government announces 22 deaths and 5,155 covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government have confirmed 22 people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours,

The latest figures for Scotland showed 5,155 new cases had also been identified overnight. Test positivity is currently at 9.1 per cent.

There are currently 544 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 38 being treated in intensive care.

To date 4,364,802 people have received their first vaccination with 3,981,180 having a second jab, while 2,254,406 have received a third dose or booster.

The figures come as it's revealed half of adults support a two week lockdown across the UK in the battle against the Omicron variant.

A poll also found majority backing for closing nightclubs and stopping large events.

Governments across the UK are reimposing protections over a surge in cases in the new covid variant.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon yesterday advised Scots to limit their socialising to a maximum of three households before and immediately after Christmas, amongst other measures.

And her deputy John Swinney suggested this morning there is potential for even more restrictions.
