Scottish Government announces 19 deaths and 2,796 covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed that 19 people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours,

The latest figures for Scotland showed that 2,796 new cases had also been identified overnight. Test positivity is at 7.9 per cent.

There are currently 702 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 54 being treated in intensive care.

To date 4,347,880 people have received their first vaccination with 3,951,364 having a second jab.

The figures come as Scots are being urged to postpone their winter holidays if they are vulnerable to Covid-19.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) have issued updated travel guidance following the emergence and rise of the Omicron variant.

The strain first announced by health officials in South Africa last week and there have since been several cases reported in Scotland.

The variant is said to contain a 'large number' of mutations, some of which are believed to be 'deeply worrying'.

It has been attributed to a recent surge in cases in southern Africa.

It is unknown how effective vaccines are against it at this time.
