Scottish Government announces 18 deaths and 2,417 covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed that 18 people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours,

The latest figures for Scotland showed that 2,417 new cases had also been identified overnight.

It brings the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 8,773.

11,134 deaths have been registered in Scotland where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

There are currently 943 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 61 being treated in intensive care.

The total number of positive cases since the pandemic started stands at 585,647.

To date 4,246,101 people have received their first vaccination with 3,859,839 having a second jab.

The figures come as free mass covid testing could end in the UK despite fears of a winter surge of infections.

Scots have been able to order lateral flow tests to their homes and book a PCR test without having to pay for either of them.

However, the UK Government is believed to be in talks over scaling back the scheme which allows Scots to test for free.
