Scottish Government announces 17 deaths and 6,400 Covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed that 17 people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours,

The latest figures for Scotland showed that 6,400 new cases had also been identified overnight.

It brings the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 8,144.

There are currently 624 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 55 being treated in intensive care.

To date 4,111,513 people have received their first vaccination while 3,699,250 have had a second jab.

It comes after Nicola Sturgeon issued a warning at Scottish Parliament yesterday after Covid-19 cases rose by 80% in the last week.

The First Minister urged individuals and businesses to adhere to the current guidelines to limit the spread of the Delta variant.

Although she ruled out any further restrictions, Sturgeon also announced her plans to introduce coronavirus passports this year.

This has already sparked backlash among some and MSPs will soon have the opportunity to debate and vote on these plans.
