Scottish Government announces 16 deaths and 2,432 covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed 16 people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

It brings the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 9,634.

The latest figures for Scotland showed 2,432 new cases had also been identified overnight.

The total number of positive cases since the pandemic started stands at 735,750.

There are currently 652 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 46 being treated in intensive care.

To date 4,350,133 people have received their first vaccination with 3,954,992 having a second jab, while 1,790,728 have received a third dose or booster.

The figures come as Nicola Sturgeon has said she is 'very sorry' to those turned away when going to get their covid booster shots.

The First Minister accepted "a small number of people" had been unable get their third jabs at Scots vaccination centres.

However, she insisted the rollout was progressing well in Scotland, saying it remains the most vaccinated country in the UK.

Previously, the advice issued was people should wait six months after their second jab dose until getting a booster.

The JCVI has since announced they can be given after three months.

Many took to social media to complain that, despite this change, they have not yet been able to get their third injection.
