Scottish Government announces 13 deaths and 11,962 covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed that 13 people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures for Scotland showed that 11,962 new cases had also been identified overnight, bringing the total number to 914,84 since the pandemic began.

The death toll now stands at 9,858.

There are currently 859 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 36 being treated in intensive care.

4,382,665 people have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccination, 4,015,376 their second, and 2,979,334 have received a third dose or booster.

The new figures come as a UK-wide body has approved a covid treatment which it says can reduce the risk of hospitalisation and death in high-risk patients by 89%.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) approved Paxlovid following a “rigorous review of its safety, quality and effectiveness”.

The new treatment is for people with mild to moderate covid who are at high risk of developing a severe case.

The MHRA said of the tablet-based treatment: “In a clinical trial in high-risk adults with symptomatic Covid-19 infection, a five day treatment course of Paxlovid reduced the risk of Covid-19 related hospitalisation and death within 28 days by 89% when compared to a placebo group when treatment was started within 3 days of the onset of COVID-19 symptoms.”
