Scottish Government announces 13 deaths and 1,398 Covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed that 13 people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures for Scotland also showed that 1,398 new cases had been identified overnight.

It means the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – sits at 7,924.

There are currently 490 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 60 being treated in intensive care.

The total number of positive cases since the pandemic started stands at 342,704.

To date 4,005,421 people have received their first vaccination with 3,145,017 having a second jab.

It comes as the Scottish Government announced fully vaccinated travellers from the USA and EU will not have to quarantine on arrival in Scotland.

The announcement comes just hours after the UK Government issued similar guidance.

The travel industry had campaigned for changes to quarantine rules, saying it was hurting those who live abroad from visiting family and friends.

Transport secretary Michael Matheson has said "it was made possible by the overwhelming success of the vaccination programme."

From Monday the need to self-isolate if travelling from an amber list country will be waived, as well as the requirement for a PCR test on day eight after arrival.

However, all travellers will still need to produce a negative test result prior to departure and a negative PCR test result on day two after arrival.

The documentation required to show proof of vaccination is the EU Digital Covid Certificate or the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's white card, known as a CDC card.
