Scottish Government announces 11 deaths and 1,307 covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed that 11 people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours,

The latest figures for Scotland showed that 1,307 new cases had also been identified overnight.

It brings the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 7,848.

There are currently 478 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 60 being treated in intensive care.

The total number of positive cases since the pandemic started stands at 337,471.

To date 3,994,883 people have received their first vaccination with 3,064,441 having a second jab.

The figures come after a public health expert controversially told the public to delete the app that informs them they need to self-isolate.

Professor Allyson Pollock said the UK government's strategy is "not fit for purpose" and it would be better for only people with symptoms to quarantine.

Lib Dem MSP Alex Cole-Hamilton responded: “I respect Professor Pollock’s knowledge and experience in the field of public health, but it really matters that people get consistent advice from everyone in positions of authority right now.

“The sands are shifting on covid rules nearly every day and most people are struggling to keep up. The app is keeping people safe, so I’m not sure it’s responsible to suggest people delete it, especially when the contact tracers are under so much pressure and aren’t getting to everyone in time.”

Although those who have been in close contact of those who have tested positive for covid-19 must isolate, high infection rates has led to a 'pingmdemic' where hundreds of thousands have forced to isolate.

This has led to a relaxing of restrictions for people who work in critical roles where staff shortages are in danger of putting at risk essential services, such as health and social care, transport and the provision of food supplies.
