Scottish Government announces 11 covid deaths and 3,077 cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed 11 people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

It brings the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 9,672.

The latest figures for Scotland showed 3,077 new cases had also been identified overnight.

There are currently 582 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 41 being treated in intensive care.

To date 4,357,567 people have received their first vaccination with 3,965,437 having a second jab, while 1,961,588 have received a third dose or booster.

It comes as Boris Johnson issued an unreserved apology for a Downing Street lockdown party and promised that those involved would face the sack.

Johnson said he was "furious" about the revelation and said: “I understand public anxiety and I understand public indignation.”

However, he maintained that he had no prior knowledge of the party and said he had asked the UK's top civil servant to investigate.

This is despite leaked footage indicating that the gathering had been pre-planned.
