Scottish Government announces 10 deaths and 2,569 covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed that 10 people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

It brings the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 9,572.

The latest figures for Scotland show 2,569 new cases had also been identified overnight.

It puts the total number of positive cases since the pandemic started at 727,549.

There are currently 706 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 54 being treated in intensive care.

To date 4,346,736 people have received their first vaccination with 3,949,736 having a second jab and 1,687,792 having a third dose or booster.

The figures come as Nicola Sturgeon prepares to give a statement as cases of the new Omicron variant continue to grow.

The First Minister is expected to address the number of Omicron cases identified over the past 24 hours in Scotland.

There have already been nine new cases in the country yesterday, a significant rise from three the previous day.

Five of these have been identified in Lanarkshire and the other four in Greater Glasgow.
