Scottish Government announce 2,403 new Covid cases in past 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed that 2,403 new cases of coronavirus have been recorded in the last 24 hours,

There have been no further deaths recorded in the country.

It brings the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 9,031.

There are currently 896 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 61 being treated in intensive care.

To date 4,302,382 people have received their first vaccination with 3,890,477 having a second jab.

The figures come as Glasgow's health board has urged patients only to attend A&E if an issue is "life-threatening" after it emerged that 32% of attendances in one week at the board's flagship hospital were for minor injuries.

Health boards across the country have struggled to deal with normal service on top of the pandemic, leading to NHS Lanarkshire to move the highest available risk level - dubbed "Code Black" - on Thursday.

An email to staff said there was a "full-blown NHS crisis" and treatments including cancer procedures would be delayed.

According to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 32% of attendances at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital A&E department were deemed not to be life threatening, with staff treating injuries including bruising, cut fingers and lower back pain.
