Scottish Government announce 11 new coronavirus deaths and 1,433 cases overnight

There were 11 new coronavirus deaths overnight in Scotland, the Scottish Government has announced.

A further 1,433 Scots have also tested positive for the deadly virus as cases continue to rise across the country.

Since the start of the pandemic a total of 55,449 people have tested positive for the deadly virus.

985 patients are currently being treated in hospital while 84 remain in intensive care.

Of the positive cases 524 were in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 321 in Lanarkshire, 166 in Lothian and 174 in Ayrshire and Arran. The rest are split between the other nine health boards in Scotland.

The news comes as Nicola Sturgeon last week unveiled her five-tier lockdown plan for Scotland in a bid to tackle the virus.

The Government also issued advice this morning to Scottish families planning to go guising for Halloween next weekend.

Parents are being asked to keep children home, and dress up for Halloween, or have a family Halloween party at home.

It is being advised that guising from door to door should not take place this year to limit the spread of coronavirus.

On Thursday Scots were warned to get ready for a “digital Christmas” that will not be normal.

Jason Leitch, the National Clinical Director of the Scottish Government, has given a frank assessment of the spread of  covid-19.

Professor Leitch said that the introduction of the five-tier Scottish lockdown, due to be formally announced today, would bring the infection rate down but was cautious about easing restrictions on people’s lives over the winter.

Leitch said: “I’m hopeful costs now may get us a more family Christmas. But Christmas is not going to be normal, absolutely no question about that.”

He told BBC Scotland: “We’re not going to be in large family groupings with multiple families coming round that is fiction for this year."

A new five-tier framework for battling the virus has been announced by the Scottish Government this week.

Restrictions will depend on which tier your area is in.
