Scottish Government adopts Marcus Rashford free school meal plan over the holidays

The Scottish Government has announced £10m of funding to provide free school meals during the holidays.

Shirley Anne-Somerville said the extra support would benefit around 156,000 children and young people.

Marcus Rashford, a striker for Manchester United, has been campaigning for pupils to receive free school meals during the October and Christmas holidays.

Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard picked up the call after the footballer saw his campaign to expand a free school meals scheme in England rejected by Downing Street.

Earlier this week, a Scottish Government spokesman left the door open to supporting the call:

"We are looking closely at what further support on free school meals can be provided during school holidays."

At the daily press briefing, Somerville, the Cabinet Secretary for Social Security and Older People, said: "We will make over £10million available to continue the delivery of free school meal provision for forthcoming holidays, including Christmas, the February break and Easter."
