Scottish gigs and events under threat due to coronavirus

Large events in Scotland are set to be cancelled as of next week amid growing concern over the spread of coronavirus.

A ban on music concerts and gatherings of more than 500 people will likely be put in place from Monday - after Nicola Sturgeon announced today that it would be “inappropiate to continue as normal”.

The First Minister warned that mass gatherings would take away front-line workers battling coronavirus, due to large-scale events needing police and emergency ambulance cover as well as volunteers.

Panicked concertgoers are already frantically trying to resell their tickets amid Covid-19 panic , with online ticket marketplaces reporting a spike in people re-listing tickets.

Ticketing sites are strongly advising fans due to attend upcoming events to check with the venue if they are still to go ahead after a string of artists have already cancelled shows.

Here we look at what events could be under threat of being cancelled in Scotland over the coming weeks.

The Who

The Who have already cancelled their upcoming UK tour due to coronavirus.

The veteran rockers were due to kick off on Monday in Manchester but released a statement today claiming they wanted to "keep fans safe" amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

The cancelled performances include a gig at Glasgow's SSE Hydro on Monday, March 23.

Guitarist Pete Townsend, 74, said the band ”haven’t reached this decision easily, but given the concerns about public gatherings, we couldn’t go ahead”.

The shows will be rescheduled for later in the year. All tickets will be honoured.

And singer Roger Daltrey, 76, assured fans that the shows will “definitely happen and it may be the last time we do a tour of this type, so keep those tickets, as the shows will be fantastic".

Santana

Carlos Santana is the latest musician to cancel concerts due to growing fear over Covid-19.

The 72-year-old rocker was due to perform in Glasgow on March 26 but has cancelled his European tour over "public health concerns".

It is not known if the guitarist will reschedule the show.

Iain Stirling

The Scotland-born funnyman and Love Island voice-over is set to embark on a UK tour for his stand-up show Falling Upwards and will visit numerous Scottish locations, including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Falkirk.

But the comedian was forced to cancel four of his shows in London, Bristol and Brighton this week due to feeling "under the weather".

The comedian wrote on Twitter today: "I’d usually be very happy to soldier on, with the current situation me and my team think it’s correct to take the precautionary measure of postponing my gig in London tonight, as well as my dates next week in Bristol and Brighton."

He added that the shows would be resechdeuled.

It is not known if his illness is coronavirus-related and if his string of Scottish shows in March will be post-poned.

Simple Minds

Famous Glasgow rockers Simple Minds are due to perform in Hydro next month on their highly-anticipated European tour.

But their only Scottish date has already been thrown into doubt after the band was forced to split two of their Denmark gigs into four shows due to coronavirus fears.

Cirque du Soleil

The biggest touring circus company in the world is set to wow fans for a string of Scottish dates in Glasgow and Aberdeen kicking off this weekend.

But the Montreal-based entertainment company may be forced to cancel shows due to the ban on gatherings of more than 500 people.

Pussycat Dolls

The chart-topping girl group are due to storm the stage at Glasgow's SSE Hydro on April 11.

But could their performance be cancelled or post-poned due coronavirus.

Lead singer Nicole Sherzinger has already been spotted wearing a face mask to protect against the virus as she jetted to LA.

Rick Astley

Veteran pop singer Rick Astley is due to perform at the SEC Armadillo at the start of April with support from KT Tunstall.

But his gig - which will feature hits from his new career-spanning compilation The Best of Me - may not go ahead if the ban on large-scale gatherings follows through in Scoltand.

David Gray

British singer-songwriter David Gray is hitting the road in to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of his fourth album White Ladder.

He is due to perform in Glasgow on March 21, but fans are strongly advised to check with the venue before attending.

Ricky Gervais

English comedian Ricky Gervais is due to perform at the SEC Armadillo on April 7 as part of his SuperNature stand-up tour.

But with dozens of events being cancelled or post-poned, it is not known if the sold-out event will continue.
