Scottish football restart plans revealed as SFA and SPFL hold talks over games WITH fans

The SFA and SPFL's coronavirus working group has held talks over getting Scottish football restarted - WITH fans - at neutral venues that will host several games per weekend.

The game has been shut down since the middle of March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the lower leagues declared over.

A decision to end the Premiership is expected in the coming days, with Celtic to be crowned champions on a points-per-game basis.

Attention is now turning to how the 2020-21 season can start, with the SPFL aiming to get underway by the end of July.

Chairman Murdoch MacLennan said this week: "Time is short.

"In reality, we must do everything humanly possible to get games back up and running by the end of July."

The Bundesliga will return this weekend, while Serie A is planning to restart on June 13 and the Premier League have launched their own 'project restart'.

However, all of those scenarios entail playing behind closed doors, something that could cripple Scottish clubs financially.

Top flight clubs get over 40 per cent of their revenue from matchday income, the highest in Europe, and that figure will be even more stark in the lower divisions where there is little or no television money.

As a result, the working group has looked to come up with a way to allow supporters into stadiums.

The club and supporter welfare task force, one of six, discussed "Scottish football’s reliance on match day supporter-related revenue".

They held talks over "planning for supporter inclusion at matches undertaken on the principle of 2m social distancing measures" as well as "identifying ‘hub’ stadiums across the country with potential to host multiple matches over a weekend, centralise match day resourcing and manage spectator safety".

The group will now look to explore the possibility of using hub stadiums "with a view to identifying supporter-based considerations on the use of such a model".

It's not clear how social distancing can be ensured in such models, with many fans travelling to matches on coaches or trains.

The document promises to give "consideration to wider implications for supporter travel and hospitality" but it would appear far from certain the Scottish Government would be willing to see fans travel to 'hub' stadiums for matches as early as July.

There was also discussion of moving the summer transfer window, with a deadline of June 9 given for any changes.

The SFA will advise on any change before the end of May.
