Scottish football handed £1.79 million government support as Motherwell and Hamilton among clubs to benefit

Five sports will share £2.55 million worth of Scottish government support as help to combat losses during recent Covid restrictions arrives.

Football is the biggest beneficiary with £1.79 million and ice hockey, horse racing, rugby and basketball also earn a percentage.

The funding comes from the £5 million announced for sport on January 5. It will cover 75% of losses sustained after a rise in Covid cases led to outdoor attendances being limited to 500 from 26 December.

Motherwell's Boxing Day fixture against Livingston was impacted while Hamilton have missed home gates against Kilmarnock and Partick Thistle.

Airdrie, Albion Rovers and Clyde will also benefit.

Sports minister Maree Todd said: "This funding will help to ensure clubs are able to bridge the gap in revenue as spectators return safely to sports events in larger numbers when these restrictions are eased next week.

"This government has pledged to provide funding to support organisations affected by the necessary measures to keep us all safe.

"These allocations show we are doing this."

The amount given to each club will be finalised by the SFA and SPFL.
