Scottish football faces £100m pandemic loss as SFA report makes grim reading

Scottish football has already been hit with combined losses of over £70m due to the coronavirus pandemic and the total bill could reach nine figures before fans return to stadiums.

The Daily Mail reports that each of the 42 SPFL clubs were asked to detail their losses since Covid caused a total football shutdown in March.

And the SFA have informed the Scottish Parliament of a gigantic financial black hole in our game with losses expected to exceed £100m before long.

Clubs were asked to tally their losses from key revenue areas such as ticket sales and sponsorship and the result is mind-bogglingly high at £70m.

The news comes as Rangers are the latest senior club to release accounts showing the effect of the pandemic on their finances with a £15.9m loss.

Chairman Douglas Park and director John Bennet have had to step in to cover an £8.8m projected loss this season and a £14.4m projected deficit next term.

Celtic, so long the gold standard of Scottish football financial results, barely scraped a profit despite selling Kieran Tierney for nearly £25m.

Meanwhile Aberdeen have announced a near £3m hit to their bottom line as the club struggled without match day income from March.

Chairman Dave Cormack warned of a "tsunami" ready to hit our game and urged the Scottish Government to organise a strategy to ensure the game's survival.

He said: "We're not looking for handouts. We're looking to get together with the Scottish Government and get a plan in place.

"What I would like to see in the plan is to give us 1,000 fans for the next home game then 1500 and let it graduate from there."
