Scottish food spot namechecked by top critic in UK best value seaside eats list

A Fife food spot famed for its flavour-packed toasties has been named one of the best value seaside eats in Britain by a top food critic and praised as 'an absolute gem'.

Renowned restaurant rewiewer Jay Rayner's guide to the 10 best value places to eat around the British coastline was recently published in the Guardian and features two Scottish locations as well as seaside eateries from the likes of Sussex, Cornwall and Yorkshire.

The Oban Seafood Hut represents the west coast on the list with it being heralded for its fresh lobsters, oysters, crabs, shrimp and squid and on the east coast The Cheesy Toasty Shack has gained similar acclaim.

The popular St Andrews lunch location makes a roaring trade on account of its flavoursome toasties, with hearty fillings including Mac and Cheese, Ham, Cheese and Pickle and Red Leicester and Chorizo.

Having previously won the Street Vendor of the Year title and been Scottish Street Food Finalists, The Cheesy Toasty Shack has long been a welcome stop off for those travelling up and down the Fife Coast.

In his article, Jay Rayner described the award-winning toasty venue as a 'an absolute gem' and said: "There are few food items better engineered for the elemental challenges of a trip to the Scottish seaside than a cheese toastie, and there are few places that do them better than these two takeaway operations on the beach in St Andrews.

"These are serious items, built to keep you going as the winds blow and the sea crashes. The bread is cut thick. It’s bronzed and a little oily outside, with a deep filling. And all of them cost around a fiver.

"You can go for something pretty basic from the regularly changing menu; perhaps the Scottish cheddar with smoked ham and pickle. Or you can be a little more adventurous. There’s the manchego with chorizo, red pepper and jalapeno chutney, or the New Yorker made with sliced swiss, pastrami, American mustard and sauerkraut."

It's worth marking on a map for a stop off next time you're heading towards St Andrews!
