'Scottish Flag Tin?': Union Jack advertised as Scotland flag on tourist souvenir

A "UNION Jack" biscuit tin from Walkers was branded as representing the "Scottish Flag" in a store in Edinburgh.

Photographed in Edinburgh Waverley station’s WHSmith store by pro-independence online magazine Bella Caledonia, the Walkers shortbread tin was shared on social media.

The “Pure Butter Union Jack Shortbread Tin” was labelled “Scottish Flag Tin” at a price of £10.99.

Online, the correct tin is described as “a 136g tin of delicious Scottish Shortbread made by Walkers and presented in a small but perfectly formed Scottish Saltire flag gift tin”.

Twitter/X users were quick to voice their discontent – in good humour – with one user writing: “Lord Frost's favourite Scottish dish? “ and “Well, that will be staying on the shelves”.

Another added: “Walkers make both Saltire and Union flag tins. This will likely be someone at the shop having a laugh. Or else they've sold out of the saltires and have expanded the merchandising of the butcher's apron to try and flog them.”

Data released in August 2023 from the Knowledge Bank in partnership with Scotland Food and Drink revealed that 89% of shoppers would like to buy more food and drink produced in Scotland when shopping for food to eat at home.

Social media campaign group Keep Scotland the Brand shared the data and replied to the post: “The evidence is clear: It pays to #keepScotlandtheBrand”.
