Scottish firefighters say they've now dealt with surge in wheelie bin fires

Police and fire service officers are cautiously optimistic the surge in wheelie bin fires across the county has played out after erupting earlier this year.

Fire crews were attacked in Livingston just before the Easter Holidays after teenagers set fire to several bins.

Since then both police and fire officers have been working with council youth workers to tackle what has proved to be along running problem in West Lothian.

Local fire service liaison officer WM Lee Clark told local area committee members at recent meetings in Whitburn and Blackburn, as well as East Livingston: “The number of fires has gone down.

"I wouldn’t want to jinx it, but we are seeing fewer.”

In the wake of incidents earlier this year the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service launched an intense campaign around local communities to drive home the message about the potential dangers to youths setting bins alight- as well as costs in terms of fire service and emergency service call out.

Fire crews also took time  to mount patrols in some towns and villages  to engage with teenagers and youth liaison work remains core to what the SFRS  is doing as preventative measures.

Work is ongoing to highlight the wider costs to  the community as part of a multi-agency approach to safer streets.
