Derek Mackay alleged to have sent messages to 16-year-old boy

The Scottish finance secretary Derek Mackay is facing serious allegations after a newspaper claimed he has been sending messages to a 16-year-old boy.

The Scottish Sun alleges that he contacted the boy over a six-month period on Instagram and Facebook.

The newspaper claims that the 42-year-old MSP for Renfrewshire North and West invited the boy to dinner and to attend a rugby event.

It also published a series of online messages involving MacKay and the boy.

In one exchange it is alleged MacKay told the teenager he was 'cute'.

In another conversation he teenager confirms he is 16 and tells MacKay 'not to try anything'.

The teenager's mum told the newspaper she is calling for MacKay to be removed from his post.

The politician is due to present the Scottish government's budget at Holyrood later.

The Daily Record has contacted the Scottish Government for comment.
