Scottish energy provider invests in social distancing wrist watch

A Scottish start-up’s safe-distance wristwatch has reached a milestone of 10,000 devices deployed after a Scottish global energy company invested in the product to meet health and safety standards.

Edinburgh-based Reactec devised Safe-Distance as a tool to be used within construction, rail, manufacturing and other workplaces.

Oil States, based in Aberdeen, has now rolled out the wearable system at its facility in Whitburn, West Lothian. It has invested in 210 Safe-Distance watches to ensure health and safety in the workplace.

Reactec was founded in 2001 as an University of Edinburgh spin-out and has designed a wristwatch to monitor workers’ exposure to health risks.

It repurposed the watch to help employers manage social distancing of workforces during the pandemic.

Matt Askham, UK health and safety environment manager at Oil States, said: “As a major employer, the health and safety of our workforce is at the core of our values with safety being our top priority particularly in these unusual times of increased hygiene and social distancing.

“The data from the analytical software has enabled the business to quickly assess and target persons of concern to enable the continued functioning of the facility by allowing other employees to remain at work.”
