Scottish Election 2021: SNP and Greens secure independence majority in Holyrood

A majority for Scottish independence has been achieved in the Holyrood parliament.

The SNP and the Scottish Greens under Patrick Harvie and Lorna Slater have surpassed the majority of 65 in the parliament.

Nicola Sturgeon said throughout the campaign that independence would not be looked at until the country has come through the devastating coronavirus pandemic.

Alexander Burnett and the Scottish Tories all but stopped the SNP in their aim of getting an overall majority in the parliament after they held onto Aberdeenshire West.

During Sturgeon acceptance speech, she said: "The people of Scotland have voted to give pro-independence parties a majority in the Scottish Parliament - the final tally is not yet know, but it looks likely that the pro independence majority will be larger in this parliament than in the last one.

"The SNP and Scottish Greens both stood on a clear commitment to an independence referendum within the next Parliamentary term."

Eustice, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, dismissed indyref2 to Times Radio: “We think this is a complete distraction.

“It would be irresponsible to have another divisive referendum and another bout of constitutional debate at a time when we are charting our way out of this pandemic and when we’ve got to really focus on economic recovery.

“We think it’s completely the wrong thing to be doing.

“We had a referendum just a little over five years ago and that settled the issue.”
