Scottish Election 2021: Simple guide to the West Scotland regional list

The West Scotland region could play a pivotal role in how the Scottish election pans out.

Will the SNP secure a majority or will Scottish Labour and the Tories prevent them securing the 65 seats needed?

The constituencies of Dumbarton, currently Labour, and Eastwood, held by the Tories, are tight races with the SNP so the regional list in West Scotland could play an important role.

Transport, Scotland's recovery from the covid pandemic, town centre regeneration and job security are just some of the issues on the campaign trail.

West Scotland takes in a number of large towns across the west of the country, including Dumbarton and Paisley.

Here's all you need to know about the West Scotland regional list:

What happened last time?

In the 2016 election for the Scottish parliament the Labour party managed to secure three seats in the regional list.

The Scottish Conservatives also managed to return three MSPs to the Holyrood chamber for the five-year term.

Scottish Greens Ross Greer secured the seventh spot on the list (Ross Greer)

With six seats going to the biggest pro-union parties the Scottish Greens were able to pick up the last MSP in the West Scotland region.

Ross Greer was the lucky Green candidate.

Who is standing this time?

Nicola Sturgeon's SNP has put up 11 candidates for the regional list in the West Scotland area. That list is headed by Michelle Campbell, followed by Stuart McMillan, Kenny Gibson, Rona Mackay, Colm Merrick, Lorna Douglas, Annette Ireland, Debra Torrance, Gavin Lundy, Jonathan McColl and Daniel Kennedy.

Former Tory leader Jackson Carlaw tops the list for his party. He is alongside nine of his colleague which include: Russell Findlay, Jamie Greene, Pam Gosal, Julie Pirone, Andrew Polson, Derek Stillie, Maurice Corry,Caroline Hollins and David Rocks.

For Labour Dumbarton candidate Jackie Baillie is the number one on the list.

Neil Bibby, Katy Clark, Paul O’Kane, Johanna Baxter, Matt Kerr, Francesca Brennan, Douglas McAllister, Katie Pragnell, Gurpreet Singh Johal, Ed Grady and Nairn McDonald all secured a place.

Ross Greer tops the Greens list, he is joined by six of colleagues.

The Lib Dems have put seven candidates up.

What is expected this time?

The constituency vote could determine who gets MSPs into the Holyrood chamber through the list system.

If Dumbarton and Eastwood stay in the hands of Labour and the Tories respectively then the Greens and Lib Dems may benefit from that.

Nevertheless, Anas Sarwar's Labour and Douglas Ross's Tories are expected to dominate the regional list once again in the West of Scotland.

What are the main issues?

Like many areas across the country Scotland's recovery from the coronavirus pandemic will be the main issue for voters when they are casting their votes at the polling booth.

With Glasgow on the doorstep of many in the region transport links are an important issue for those you live in the area. ScotRail providing a reliable service would be something voters are concentrated on.

Healthcare is also an issue on the doorstep as well as job security as Scotland recovers from the devastating pandemic.
