Scottish Election 2021: Simple guide to Central Scotland regional list

Wedged between the country's two largest cities, the Central Scotland region includes both densely populated towns and more rural locations.

There are nine constituency seats in the region, from Falkirk East to Airdrie and Shotts, and they are all expected to stay in the SNP 's hands following the May 6 election.

Scottish Labour and the Tories will look to secure the seven seats up for grabs on the list, like they did at the 2016 vote.

The Central Scotland region takes in a number of large towns including Falkirk, Airdrie, East Kilbride and Motherwell, and they all have their own specific issues.

Here's all you need to know about the Central Scotland list:

What happened last time?

The results of the regional list went to the Scottish Conservatives and Scottish Labour.

In 2016, Kezia Dugdale's Labour picked up four of the seven seats up for grabs, while Ruth Davidson's Tories managed to secure the other three.

Richard Leonard, who would go on to be Labour leader during the parliament, topped the list.

Tory Margaret Mitchell got the second seat, while Labour's Monica Lennon secured third.

Graham Simpson (Tory), Elaine Smith (Labour) and Alison Harris (Tory) all managed to get a seat in the Holyrood chamber.

Who is standing this time?

Richard Leonard is the biggest name on the list from all the political parties represented this time out.

Others on the Labour list include: Monica Lennon, Mark Griffin, Monique McAdams, Chris Costello, Michael McPake and Allyson Black.

For the Tories former Stirling MP Stephen Kerr tops the regional list. He is joined by Graham Simpson, Meghan Gallacher, Haroun Malik, Neil Benny, Ross Lambie, Nathan Wilson, Gordon Macdonald, Bryan Flannagan.

The SNP picked up all the constituency seats in the region in 2016. Nicola Sturgeon's party have put up 11 candidates. They are led by Danish Ashraf.

The Scottish Greens have seven candidates on its list, while the Lib Dems also have seven.

What is expected this time?

Like in 2016, the SNP is expected to pick up all nine of the constituency seats at this election.

That means Nicola Sturgeon's party may not feature on the list again.

Douglas Ross's Scottish Conservatives and Anas Sarwar's Labour party will likely fill the regional list again, however if the Lib Dems or the Scottish Greens pick up a larger share of the vote then they may sneak in.

Monklands General Hospital is set to be replaced (Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertise)

What are the main issues?

Scotland's recovery from the coronavirus pandemic is big issue for many regions across the country.

For those in Central Scotland jobs, NHS funding and better public transport links are the big issues that candidates are encountering when out on the campaign trail.

The replacement of the Monklands Hospital and insuring it is delivered on time will be a key issue as well.
