Scottish Election 2021: All of the Ayrshire results and what they mean for you

Ayrshire is canary yellow after the SNP took charge of every constituency seat in the region.

The incredible clean sweep for the Nationalists meant that Nicola Sturgeon's party took 64 seats in the Scottish Parliament — one short of the magic majority.

Coronavirus restrictions surrounding the election meant that the counting of votes was extended into Saturday evening.

All regional list MSPs were elected yesterday with two areas affecting Ayrshire voters — South Scotland and West Scotland.

The South Scotland region covers a vast belt of Scotland's border enveloping almost 200 miles from East to West.

The region takes in the following constituencies: Ayr; Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley; and Kilmarnock & Irvine Valley.

While the West Scotland region covers as far North as Dumbarton and takes in Cunninghame North and Cunninghame South constituencies.

Who won?

The aforementioned Ayrshire constituencies saw five SNP MSPs directly elected through voting.

But in South Scotland three Conservative, three Labour and one SNP were also elected — including Brian Whittle who stood for Kilmarnock & Irvine Valley and Sharon Dowey, who took second place in Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley. Labour politician Colin Smyth was also re-elected on the list.

In West Scotland two Cunninghame North candidates who couldn't better Kenneth Gibson's votes, managed to secure Holyrood seats via the list.

Conservative Jamie Greene will be retuning to Scottish Parliament while Katy Clark, a Labour life peer in the House of Commons, makes her first return to politics after her decade as an MP was brought to an end in 2015.

Returning Ross Greer is also one of eight Scottish Green Party MSPs heading to Holyrood — a record number of politicians for the independence-supporting party.

What happens now?

Two of Ayrshire's new SNP MSPs could have triggered by-elections in their respective council areas.

Elena Whitham is currently the deputy leader of East Ayrshire Council and her successful bid for Holyrood now means that the local authority may need to hold a by-election in the Irvine Valley ward.

It could also mean that the ruling SNP party on the council, headed by leader Douglas Reid, will have to select a new deputy leader.

The same situation has arisen at South Ayrshire Council where Siobhian Brown will also be heading to the Scottish Parliament.

As a result, Ms Brown's Ayr West seat could be up for grabs.
