Scottish double Commonwealth champion diver Grace Reid retires aged 29

Scottish double Commonwealth Games champion Grace Reid has announced her decision to retire from elite diving aged 29.

The Edinburgh-born Olympian has called time on her career in diving after 25 years in the sport, with 15 of those on the world stage.

Reid - who left an "indelible mark on the sport in Scotland" according to Scottish Swimming - represented Scotland and Great Britain but will now explore new opportunities outside of top-level competition.

At just 14, Reid was part of Team Scotland for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. She would then represent Team GB at Rio 2016, having won gold at the European Diving Championships that year.

Reid would become the first-ever female diving medallist for Team Scotland in 2018, where she won the 1m Springboard event at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

The Scot would go on to compete for Team GB in three consecutive Olympic Games from 2016 in Rio to Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.

Reid won a second European title in Edinburgh in 2018, in the Women's 3m discipline. She won her second Commonwealth title in 2022 in the 3m mixed synchro.

“I think the biggest thing for me is a feeling that I’m leaving on my own terms and feeling like I’ve done everything I wanted to do in the sport,” said Reid on retiring from the sport.

“I think after Paris a lot of people might have expected me to retire, but the biggest thing for me was loving my sport and getting to a point of feeling that I’d left no stone unturned – I achieved that this year on so many levels.

“Making another world championship team this summer, I just loved every second of it, but when I did my last dive in Singapore I knew that something was different. Everyone always said to me, ‘well, you’ll know when you know’ and that couldn’t be more true. I just, I know in my heart that it’s time for a new adventure and a new chapter.”

On her personal highlights from a glittering career, Reid said: “There’re different points in my career that I’m so proud of and that I look back on really fondly – it’s hard to narrow down.

"I think I’ve got so much to be proud of that there’s not one thing that I’m holding on a pedestal, that’s for sure.

“Obviously, making my first Olympic games, I think will always be a standout because it was something I dreamed about as a little girl and to be able to qualify for one, let alone three, it was just a huge milestone.

"Then I think probably winning gold at Europeans in front of a home crowd in Edinburgh, that’s a memory I will hold on to for the rest of my days – to see my friends and family in the crowd as I had that moment and just knowing how I stepped up under pressure.

“My biggest supporters have definitely been my mum and dad, they have just been so unwavering in their support through good through bad.

"And, you know, I’ve been so lucky to have some incredible coaches that have guided me, in and out of the pool, and all the support staff; psychology, nutrition and just the physios that have held me together physically, as well as mentally.

"I can’t thank everyone enough for every opportunity that they’ve given me to excel as much as I did.”

On Instagram, Reid posted: "All good things must come to an end.

"After 25 years in the sport and 15 years on the world stage, it’s time to hang up my swimsuit.

"When I first stepped onto a diving board at age 5, I never imagined the medals I’d win, the history I’d make, or the boundaries I’d push. It’s been a long, tough road but I wouldn’t change any of it. The success only means what it does because of what it took to get here.

"To my family, friends, coaches, teammates, and everyone behind the scenes, thank you. This was never a solo journey, and I wouldn’t be the person I am today without you.

"It’s been a privilege, G x".
