Scottish Cup replays scrapped as SFA reveal key changes to 2020/2021 tournament

The SFA has announced a raft of changes for this season's Scottish Cup with replays scrapped and clubs given the option to withdraw.

The 2019-20 edition of the tournament is still to be completed, with the semi-finals set for Hampden on Saturday and Sunday.

Hearts face Hibs in the Edinburgh derby before Celtic face Aberdeen the following day.

The rescheduled final will be held on December 20 but the 2020-21 edition will be well under way by then - with some big format changes.

With fears over scheduling amid the coronavirus pandemic there will be nine rounds this term instead of 10, starting with the preliminary round on November 28.

Replays have been scrapped for all matches, with extra time and penalties to be used if necessary.

The five substitute rule that applies in the Premiership will not be in place though clubs will still be allowed to make a fourth change if the match goes to extra-time.

Clubs are also permitted to opt out of the competition without being punished and will still receive their bonus payment for the round they would have entered.

That may come into play from round three onward as clubs drawn against Premiership opposition will have to pay to have their players tested for Covid.
