Scottish Cup: Irvine Meadow boss calls on fans to turn out in force for Musselburgh clash

Colin Spence is urging fans to pump up the volume and set Irvine Meadow off on another famous Scottish Cup journey.

Medda begin the long road to Hampden this Saturday when they host Musselburgh Athletic in a preliminary round clash.

And co-boss Spence reckons supporters can be his side’s 12th Man – just as they were in last Friday 1-0 Marymass derby win against Irvine Vics.

A crowd of around 700 created a real carnival atmosphere inside Meadow Park and Spence is pinning his hopes on another big turnout this weekend.

He said: “The crowd at the Marymass game was unbelievable. They really added to the occasion and I wish it was like that every Saturday.

“It would be fantastic if we could see the fans turn out in force again against Musselburgh.

“I’d say to them, come along and get behind the boys, because this could be the start of a journey.

“We want to see how far we can go in this competition and the fans can help us get over the line in these big games.”

Spence admits East of Scotland League Premier cracks Musselburgh pose a huge threat to Meadow’s ambitions.

He said: “I think it will be a case of whoever turns up on the day will win.

“They’re a right good team and if we’re not at our best, they will be a very dangerous side.”

Ironically, Meadow's last appearance in the Scottish Cup was at Hampden back in 2012 when they suffered a 3-0 second-round defeat at the hands of Queen's Park.

Meadow chairman Robert Jeffrey insists he can’t wait to sample Scottish football’s premier cup competition again.

He said: “From beating Arbroath to playing Hibs at Easter Road, we’ve had some special days in the Scottish Cup over the years.

“A lot of hard work that has gone on to secure a SFA licence to make it possible again and we’d love the town to get behind us.”

Kick off at Meadow Park on Saturday is 3pm.
