Scottish Cup Final fan KO as SFA announce Hibs and St Johnstone hammer blow

The SFA have announced that fans will no longer be permitted to attend the Scottish Cup Final.

A statement from the governing body on Friday night confirmed a plan to permit 600 supporters to attend the showdown between Hibs and St Johnstone at Hampden on May 22 had been crushed.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon had earlier announced that Glasgow - due to a bump in Covid-19 cases - would remain under Level 3 restrictions for at least another week.

Stadia are only permitted to open under Level 2 or below.

The SFA statement said: "Following today’s Scottish Government announcement that Glasgow will remain under level three Covid restrictions for at least another week, the Scottish government have subsequently confirmed that fans will now not be permitted to attend the Scottish Cup Final."

The official correspondence from the SFA followed national clinical director Jason Leitch admitting the plan was "not viable".

He told Clyde One said: "I'm afraid the present plan is not viable.

"With Glasgow staying in level 3, it means you can't have fans in a stadia."

Hibs also confirmed they'd been made aware of the situation.

A statement said: "Hibernian FC this evening received clarification from the Scottish FA that – owing to the Scottish Government’s decision that Glasgow should remain in Level 3 lockdown for at least the next ten days as a precaution against higher levels of Covid 19 infections – the Cup Final on May 22nd must now be played behind closed doors, with no fans present.

"Consequently, the club is unable to provide any tickets other than for those essential to the playing of the match."
