Scottish Government Covid update: Over 2,000 new cases and 64 further deaths confirmed today

More than 2,000 people have tested positive for coronavirus since Thursday, the health secretary announced at the government update today.

Th 2,160 new cases represented 7.5 per cent of tests which returned results, making Friday the fourth day in a row where the test positivity rate has continued to fall.

The majority (636) were identified in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, whilst 262 new cases were reported in the NHS Lothian region.

Jeane Freeman, who was standing in for Nicola Sturgeon, also confirmed 224,840 Scots have now had their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine.

Meanwhile, a further 31 admissions to NHS hospitals mean 1,860 people are currently being treated for the virus by medics. 141 patients are in intensive care, down one on the figure reported on Thursday.

Sadly, 61 deaths were also confirmed amongst people who had tested positive in the previous 28 days.
