Scottish council's 'rubbish excuse' for not collecting bins sparks fury

Binmen have sparked outrage after telling householders their rubbish could not be collected – because it was too heavy.

Dumfries and Galloway Council is one of the few parts of Scotland where kerbside recycling does not take place and all waste is put in the same bin.

But a social media post explaining that overfilled bins which were “too heavy’ would not be collected and instead would be tagged provoked ridicule and anger from local people.

Residents dubbed the service a “shambles” and described the area’s waste and recycling system as a “bloody joke”.

The Dumfries and Galloway Facebook post has been ridiculed (Facebook)

More than 1900 Facebook users pointed out that their bins would be lighter and less full if recycling in the area was more widespread than just in Wigtownshire.

Sharon Cameron said: “How on earth do you know if your bin is too heavy – what’s the guidance on this, or is it just up to each individual bin man?”

David Gibbons said: “I look forward to receiving bin weighing scales in the post.”

Dumfries and Galloway Council were unavailable for comment last night.
