Scottish Conservatives appoint investigative journalist Russell Findlay as new head of communications

The Scottish Conservatives have appointed an award-winning investigative journalist as their new director of communications.

Russell Findlay, known for his hard-hitting investigations into organised crime, will steer the Tories' press operation as the party steps up its planning for next year's Holyrood election.

The former Sunday Mail reporter will lead an expanded communications and policy team that also includes former MP Kirstene Hair, who lost her Angus seat at last year's election.

Findlay was almost blinded when he was set upon at his house in  Glasgow's  west end in December 2015 by a hitman who showered him in sulphuric acid.

Notorious criminal William 'Basil' Burns was convicted of assaulting Findlay to the danger of his life in 2017.

Findlay slammed Police Scotland for failing to go after the gangland figure who he suspects of ordering the attack. He later wrote a book on the subject.

In a statement, Findlay said: "After 27 years in newspaper and broadcast journalism, I am delighted to be taking up this post with the Scottish Conservatives.

“It is a privilege to be joining Douglas Ross and as he leads the party into next year's crucial Holyrood election."

Ross said: “Russell has a huge breadth of experience across Scottish media and there are very few other journalists with his investigate instincts. I’m thrilled to have him on-board and I’m sure he will prove to be a huge asset to the party.

“Russell will head up an expanded, well-rounded Scottish Conservative team with the press and policy expertise to lead us into the election campaign firing on all cylinders.”
