Scottish Conservative MSP Oliver Mundell quits party frontbench in row over border restrictions

A Scottish Tory who backed Brexit has quit his role in the party after refusing to back travel regulations restricting cross-border movement with England.

Oliver Mundell, whose dad David is a former Scottish Secretary in the UK Goverment, said it was "not possible" to balance local needs in his Dumfriesshire patch with the national rules to tackle coronavirus.

Party leader Douglas Ross, the MP for Moray, said it was disappointing.

"I appreciate that he is only doing what he feels is best for his local area," Ross said.

The vote was on travel rules brought in as part of the move to more strict levels of lockdown in parts of Scotland centred on Glasgow.

Mundell's area borders England and is in a lower level or restriction.

In a statement, Mundell explained: "I understand the difficult position that puts colleagues in and I have therefore regrettably offered Douglas Ross my resignation as a party spokesperson. I continue to fully support him and the party."

Mundell was in Ross's frontbench team and was spokesman for rural affairs. He will continue as a backbench Tory MSP at Holyrood.
