Caravan and camping sites in Scotland given July opening date

Caravan and camping sites have provisionally been given the green light to reopen in Scotland in a boost for both the tourism industry and for Scots keen to go on a staycation.

Nicola Sturgeon outlined plans for the reopening of tourism across the country earlier this afternoon as part of a raft of lockdown easing measures which included for the potential return of beer gardens and possibly even the opening of indoor areas in bars and restaurants.

Meanwhile, the five mile travel ban is due to be relaxed on July 3.

Furthermore, the likes of hairdressers and barbers could open next month, as well as museums, galleries and other tourist attractions.

However, when alluding to caravan and camping sites in Scotland, the First Minister was specific in wording with regards to 'self-contained holiday accommodation' and 'shared services'.

In the Scottish parliament, Sturgeon said: "Although the tourism sector will not open fully until 15th of July we intend that self-contained holiday accommodation, for example, holiday cottages and lodges, caravans where there are no shared services, can open from the 3rd of July."

Therefore, camping sites with shared facilities such as showers or toilets may have to wait an additional two weeks - until the middle of July, before they can fully open.

The latest Scottish Government document detailing the steps out of lockdown states: "Self-catering accommodation and second homes (without shared facilities) permitted [to reopen]" on the indicative date of July 3, forming part of phase two.

And detailed in phase three, it's stated: "All holiday accommodation permitted [to open] (following relevant guidance) on the indicative date of July 15.

Those looking to take advantage of a trip away would be best recommended to get in contact with the relevant caravan or camping site ahead of their journey, to check on how and when they intend on opening.
