Scottish Cabinet reshuffle: Record Politics discusses Nicola Sturgeon's new-look top team

Nicola Sturgeon has revealed the new Cabinet after a major reshuffle of her top team.

The First Minister said she has picked a "serious Government for the serious times we face" as the country recovers from the devastating coronavirus pandemic.

John Swinney was the first mover in the reshuffle with the Deputy First Minister removed from his education brief and given the Minister for Covid Recovery role.

His previous job has been filled by Shirley-Anne Somerville, while Humza Yousaf takes on the Health Secretary role.

Kate Forbes remains as the Finance Secretary, however her brief has been expanded considerably in the reshuffle.

Keith Brown is the new Justice Secretary taking over from Yousaf, while Michael Matheson stays at Transport.

He has been given the job of delivering the climate change COP26 conference which will be held in Glasgow in November.

Former health minister Shona Robison is now in charge of Social Justice, Housing and Local government.

Cabinet newcomer Mairi Gougeon has the role of Rural Affairs and the Islands, while SNP veteran Angus Robertson was given the constitution brief by Sturgeon.

Follow the announcement of Nicola Sturgeon's top team the Record Politics team, Paul Hutcheon, Chris McCall and Peter Davidson, sat down to discuss the main talking points.

After meeting with her new Cabinet, Sturgeon said: "I'm delighted to announce the Scottish Government's new Cabinet team. Scotland needs a serious Government for the serious times we face as a nation, and in the top level ministerial line-up I have announced today we have exactly that.

"It is a Government which will drive Scotland forward, as we look to build a just, fair and sustainable recovery from the Covid pandemic.

"My Cabinet team combines experience with new arrivals and fresh faces, giving us the range and depth of talent we need to tackle the pressing issues we need to tackle, from Covid to climate change."
