Scott Wright suffers major Aberdeen injury blow as forward could miss rest of the season

Aberdeen striker Scott Wright could miss the rest of the season with a cruciate ligament injury.

Derek McInnes has revealed the 22-year-old suffered the cruel blow in training ahead of Saturday's clash with St Johnstone.

Wright has rejoined the Dons squad this term following a loan spell at Dundee, making seven appearances so far.

But his campaign could well be over after a desperately unlucky development.

McInnes, meanwhile, is set to welcome back Shay Logan and Dean Campbell following the international break.

The Pittodrie boss said: "Scott Wright has picked up a cruciate injury in training and could be out for the rest of the season.

"Dean and Shay are both back in training and will be in the squad for Saturday."

McInnes heaped praise on Wright's fellow academy graduate Connor McLennan after his midweek heroics for Scotland U-21s .

The 19-year-old climbed off the bench and scored a dramatic double as Scot Gemmill's side stunned top seeds Croatia in Euro 2021 qualifying.

And his Aberdeen boss doesn't buy into talk of a national crisis following a report the SFA are set to conduct a root and branch review of the grassroots game in light of the senior Scotland side's latest failure.

McInnes added: "Connor has given everyone a lift at the club with his goals in midweek and he’s on a high right now.

"It’s been a bit stop start for him and this’ll hopefully kick start his season.

"I feel there’s a lot of good young technical players at our own academy and it’s not all doom and gloom for the future."
