Scott Parker leaves Burnley 'as Steven Gerrard lined up as new manager'

Burnley have confirmed the exit of Scott Parker as manager, amid reports Steven Gerrard is being lined up as his successor.

Parker guided the Clarets back to the Premier League last summer with an 100-point haul, but could not prevent the club from sliding back down to the second tier after one season.

Burnley bosses and Parker entered talks over the latter’s future last week, and a parting of ways has been “mutually” agreed.

Assistant coach Mike Jackson will take charge of Burnley’s final four games of the season.

A club statement read: “[Burnley] would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Scott for his professionalism, dedication and contribution. He leaves with the respect and gratitude of everyone connected with Burnley Football Club.”

It added: “The process of appointing a new permanent Head Coach ahead of the 2026/27 season has begun.”

Gerrard is the heavy favourite for the vacancy, in what would be his first managerial role since leaving Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq in January 2025.

The former Liverpool and England captain struggled in the Gulf, having previously put Aston Villa in danger of relegation.

Gerrard’s first managerial role brought the most success, when guiding Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title in 2021.
