Scott McTominay reveals Manchester United ambition that meant Celtic loan move was never on the cards

He was the lanky and cumbersome midfielder that burst onto the scene under Jose Mourinho and since then has never looked back.

Scott McTominay is now closing in on 100 appearances for Manchester United and is quickly becoming one of Ole Gunnar Solksjaer's most important players.

He was also set to be a vital part of Steve Clarke's Scotland squad for the Euro 2020 play-offs, and if the national team had overcome Israel and Norway or Serbia then he would have been a cert for the finals in the summer.

He still might be when the European Championships take place next summer but the 23-year-old could easily have left Old Trafford earlier on in his career.

He McTominay never wanted to leave he admits if he was told to go he would have - but while it was left up to him his focus was purely just on getting into United's first team.

Celtic were interested in him back in January 2019 with then manager Brendan Rodgers describing him a fantastic talent.

But McTominay told the Manchester United podcast: "About a year-and-a-half ago there was a time where it (loan move) might have been a possibility and then somebody leaves or something like that, and then your opportunity comes and you have to take it.

"You hear loads of stories about boys going on loan and different things like that and I always had it in my head that I don't want that. I want to be showing myself here first and if it doesn't work here then you go somewhere else.

"For me, you hear the stories about getting the life of luxury at Manchester United and people take that for granted, like the food in the canteen, your kit being laid out for you every morning.

"People just expect that and you have to always remember where you come from in that respect and always appreciate what people do for you. I feel like that is culture that is brought through for us."
