Scott McTominay reveals how he aims to replace Ander Herrera at Manchester United

Scott McTominay believes his versatility can be the key in him becoming a regular starter for Manchester United next season.

Scotland international McTominay enjoyed a successful campaign with United last season which saw him make 22 appearances across all competitions.

Ander Herrera departed United at the end of the campaign and is yet to be replaced in the summer transfer window, which is likely to provide more opportunities for the 22-year-old.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has himself cited McTominay, along with Andreas Pereira, as two players who can replace the Basque midfielder in the first team ahead of the new season.

McTominay acknowledges he has a great opportunity ahead of the new Premier League campaign, and he believes his ability in a range of different midfield roles can work to his advantage.

"That was my goal two years ago and last year," McTominay said when asked if he can be a regular starter next season.

"That's always been my goal. It's my ambition to be a regular No.6, No.8, a box to box player - that's my main ambition. It's important that I really go for that now.

"Obviously there is an opportunity there and you've got to take it with both hands. Last year I had some decent performances and it's important that I carry on from that.

"We're in the Europa League this year and it's important that I continue."

Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff continues to be linked with a move to United before the end of the transfer window, but McTominay believes he has already shown enough to fill the void left by Herrera regardless of any new recruitment.

The Scotland international added: "Regardless of what other signings come in or who plays where, you have to back yourself to be a Man United player. That's one thing that I've done over the last two years, I've always backed myself.

"I've tried to train hard and I've always wanted to do extra things to try and give me that one percent difference. When it comes to crucial times in big games like Barcelona or PSG in the Champions League, it's important that you're ready for them."
