Scott McTominay named in team of the week as Manchester United teammate snubbed

Scott McTominay is the only Manchester United representative in the BBC's team of the week - despite teammate Bruno Fernandes being named man of the match against Everton at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old scored his first Premier League goal of the season to give United a first-half lead before substitute Anthony Martial doubled the advantage after the break. Despite not scoring nor assisting, Fernandes impressed in a deeper midfield role alongside McTominay.

Both worked well together in a midfield partnership, with Bayern Munich loanee Marcel Sabitzer fielded further forward to press higher. But, despite Fernandes walking away with the man of the match award, it was McTominay who BBC football pundit Garth Crooks singled out for praise from manager Erik ten Hag's midfield against Everton.

"Two goals against Cyprus and another two against Spain in the recent European qualifying fixtures suggest McTominay is finally coming of age," Crooks' team of the week column reads. "His performance against an Everton side still finding its way under Sean Dyche was as good as I've seen from the Scotland international. McTominay is good at putting himself about. Anyone can do that but against the Toffees he demonstrated an authority I hadn't seen before.

"He didn't just stop the opposition from playing - a feature in his game he is rather good at - but he also made Manchester United play, which he normally leaves to the likes of Fernandes. It seemed as though McTominay was no longer prepared to play second fiddle to Fernandes, or anyone else, and took matters into his own hands - and about time."
