Scott McTominay has spoken about his role with Scotland at Euro 2020 as a central defender, claiming it's 'second nature'.
McTominay is naturally a central midfielder for Manchester United and often plays in a box-to-box role for his club, but for his country during Euro 2020 he has been deployed as part of a three-at-the-back system.
Steve Clarke's side were able to hold England to a 0-0 draw at Wembley thanks in part to the 24-year-old's performance in that role and he has spoken about what it's like to change role in such a big game.
Speaking to UEFA after the game, McTominay said: "The day before I knew I was playing there and the personnel who would be playing. It’s second nature now. I’ve played there before so you should know the role. Especially with this manager. I’ve played there before for him and done okay so you can adapt and do the best you can.
“Keeping a clean sheet against a really good England team was nice. England have fantastic players and you do raise your game. We know how good they can be sometimes but we were a good match. We’re more than capable of winning against Croatia.”
Before being called up to the United first-team, McTominay also played as a striker for the youth team, further highlighting his versatility.
He has also played as a makeshift defender late on in games, using his height in aerial battles and midfield experience to show composure on the ball when playing out from the back.
Scotland are hoping to progress to the round of 16 with a win over Croatia in Glasgow on Tuesday night.
