Scott McTominay issues injury update and explains excitement at Bruno Fernandes signing

Scott McTominay is closing on a Manchester United return and admits he is excited at the prospect of playing with new boy Bruno Fernandes.

McTominay had been one of few shining lights at Old Trafford this season before picking up a knee injury on Boxing Day.

The midfielder has since missed 11 games in all competitions as United’s struggles have continued.

They’re currently seventh in the Premier League, below the likes of Sheffield United, with just 35 points from 25 games.

However, there is some good news for the club’s fans as the 23-year-old is part of a squad that has travelled to Marbella for a warm-weather training camp during the winter break.

He has not yet joined the full group, instead doing ball work as he trained on his own during Sunday’s opening session at the Marbella Football Centre.

The Scotland international is confident though that he’ll join up with the main group later in the week. He told the club’s official website: “Yeah it has been going well.

"Obviously, it is never nice watching football matches when you have been playing, you want to be involved and you want to be helping the team as well.

“It is difficult, you know, but you have to find your way through it mentally more than physically sometimes.

"It is challenging, obviously, from my first proper injury.

“You need to have all of the right people around you, which I do, and that has been massively beneficial towards my recovery and obviously I want to be taking some part in the sessions towards the end of the week.

“We will just see where we go from there. So we are just going to do whatever we can to make sure I am back on the pitch as soon as possible.”

With Paul Pogba having featured in just seven league games this term, United have lacked creative flair in midfield.

Bruno Fernandes was brought in during the January transfer window from Sporting Lisbon for £47.5million - potentially rising to £67million due to add-ons.

And McTominay is pleased with the arrival of the Portugal international.

He added: “Yeah, in the brief moments that I have seen him in training, he has looked really, really good.

“He has looked like every type of player that the manager wants as well, so hopefully that can come to us on the pitch and he can show us what he can do.

"I can't wait to play alongside him.”

The Red Devils face Chelsea, who are six points clear of them in fourth, in their next game on 17 February as the battle to secure Champions League football next season intensifies.
