Scott McTominay explains why Paul Pogba affects him at Manchester United

Scott McTominay has said his role for Manchester United is affected by which players he is joined in the team by.

The Scotland international was deployed at the base of midfield in last weekend's 4-0 win over Chelsea as Paul Pogba and Andreas Pereira operated in more advanced positions.

And McTominay explained that it is his job to shield the back four whenever Pogba plays.

“Obviously when you play with Paul he likes to get in the box and your job is to make sure that we are secure at the back and we’re locked in in different areas of the pitch," McTominay told the United website.

"Obviously you have to remember and respect the fact that Paul is a world class player who can pretty much do anything on a football pitch.

"You have to adapt to sometimes what he does as well and the different runs that he might make and obviously adapt your game off that and if you are playing with someone else, you have to change that as well.

"Obviously, if you’re playing with Nemanja, Fred and Andreas in different positions like that, it’s always different with who you are playing with.”

McTominay added that he and Pogba developed a good understanding on the pitch during United's pre-season tour of Australia and Southeast Asia.

McTominay added: “You have to have a relationship with the player you’re playing with and we did have a good relationship on Tour throughout the games that we were playing when we were away.

"Obviously it’s about building that up and keeping the relationship between each other, know what each other does and keep adapting to the circumstances that we had throughout the game and I think we handled it quite well.”
