Scott McKenna makes Rangers fans admission as Aberdeen star sends message to Derek McInnes critics

Scott McKenna was delighted to silence the Red Army boo boys and admitted hearing Rangers fans turn on their team was music to his ears.

The Aberdeen defender reckons the stick Derek McInnes took during the scoreless draw at St Mirren last week was out of order after all he’s done.

McKenna said the Dons players owed their gaffer a big performance after that and delivered it with a goalless draw at Ibrox which resulted in a more positive response from their fans.

The same couldn’t be said of the disgruntled home support and McKenna admitted it was great to turn the tables. Asked if the flak for McInnes was unfair, he said: “Yes, definitely.

“What he has done at the club over the past seven years has been tremendous. I don’t think people can forget that too quickly.

“But on Saturday you could sense the home crowd turning. It always does. If they don’t get their own way you can hear the fans coming into it and getting on their backs.

“That’s music to our ears. That’s what we try to encourage. Hopefully then they start forcing things and making a few mistakes. That’s what happened. They didn’t quite have that quality with the final pass.”

Dons won at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup last season and McKenna admitted it could have been the same again with Allan McGregor named man of the match after top saves from Sam Cosgrove and Ash Taylor’s header.

Cosgrove in particular would have been expected to score after going clean through but McKenna confessed they can’t always rely on the 21-goal striker.

He said: “If Cossy had taken the chance in the first half we might have won the game. But the big man has bailed us out so many times this season so we can’t hold it against him.

“Of course it’s up to the rest of us to chip in with goals to ease the burden on Sam. We’ve actually been looking a lot at set-plays.

“With the amount of corners and free-kicks we get our head on, we should be scoring more but we are not directing it on target.

“When we are up for set pieces there is a responsibility on us and there’s a responsibility on the wide men to create chances other than relying on Sam.

“Ash Taylor had a header on target but it was a great save. We’ve been solid enough back to middle but not creating a lot of chances in the final third.

“That was always going to be hard at Ibrox so a point is probably a good result for us. Any time we have come here and got a bit of success every single one of us has stood up to every one of their players – and Saturday was the exact same.”
