Scott McKenna faces Scotland injury sweat as Aberdeen star comes a cropper on artificial Rugby Park pitch

Scott McKenna is facing a race to be fit for Scotland's Euro 2020 double header next month after the Aberdeen defender suffered a hamstring injury against Kilmarnock.

The centre-back was forced off early on in their dull 0-0 stalemate at Rugby Park as he slipped on the artificial Rugby Park surface.

The defender was replaced by on loan Bristol City defender Zak Vyner in the 27th minute.

Scotland face Russia in just 13 days' time before hosting Belgium four days later on Monday, September 9.

Derek McInnes revealed after the clash McKenna is a major doubt with a scan scheduled for Monday.

He said: “Scott slipped on the pitch going into a pass, and he felt a tear in his hamstring.

"So you would have to say, without knowing the result of a scan on Monday, that he’ll be at risk for next week and at risk for the Scotland games.

“The Kilmarnock players were moaning more about the pitch than mine were, the way they soak it at half time, players slipping left right and centre.

“I thought it was difficult.”

The Dons rejected bids from English Championship sides Queens park Rangers and Nottingham Forest, before the 22-year-old slapped in a transfer request earlier this month, days before the English transfer window shut.

Sheffield Wednesday and Bristol City were also linked with late moves for McKenna, but he remained with the Dons.

Aberdeen had a crucial Europa League qualifier against Rijeka on the eve of the window shutting south of the border, with McInnes said there was a degree of "anger, frustration and contempt” towards the English sides who had moved for the 22-year-old as he prepared to fly out to Croatia for the European tie.

The Pittodrie outfit also rejected a £7million bid from Aston Villa for the centre-back last season.

McInnes opened up on the transfer situation with McKenna this summer.

He said: “Scott was obviously keen to make that next step and look at a move.

“However, he understands and respects the club’s stance.

“It is important you respond to disappointment. I am not surprised that he dealt with everything.

“His performances have been as good as they normally are. I am not surprised by that.

“Scott deserves a lot of credit for dealing with what he has had to deal with.

“He has dealt with it and got on with what is important, which is the job in hand, and done very well for me.”
