Scott Gibbs predicts convincing Lions win and believes Gregor Townsend's influence led to Josh Adams' shock omission

Welsh Lions icon Scott Gibbs has tipped the tourists to kick off the 2021 Test series against the Springboks with a victory.

The former juggernaut inside centre also believes Warren Gatland's side will do it 'pretty convincingly'.

On paper, the teams appear so evenly matched bookmakers cannot split them and are offering identical odds for both a home and away win.

But Gibbs, who toured with the Lions three times but most memorably to South Africa in 1997, thinks discipline will play a key role, predicting a 29-22 victory for the visitors.

"I think the Lions will win and I've got a feeling they might do it pretty convincingly," Gibbs told SA Rugby Mag.

"I just have this notion that discipline is going to be key and I think there are probably 12 or 15 points there to be easily taken off the table by someone like Biggar.

"I also still think there are two or three tries in this Lions team. So just do the math on that, we're edging up to 30 points and I think it's from a comfortable perspective.

"I've got no doubt the Boks will be at the races on Saturday.

"But I just have this feeling. The first Test means so much for the [Lions] jersey, for the people that have worn it before and for future generations getting inspired.

"The elevation of performance on Saturday... we will see Gatland smiling under his mask."

When asked if the Springboks are capable of scoring over 30 points, Gibbs added: "Of course they are. But I'm putting it in the context that I feel that discipline will fall at the Boks' feet more than the Lions' feet and that's why I'm saying there are 15 points there for Biggar.

"With a few tries, you're then up to 29 points and the Boks are going to have to go some to go beyond that."

One of the most hotly-debated selection decisions from a Lions perspective this week has been the call to start Duhan van der Merwe on the wing, leaving out the tourists' top try-scorer in Josh Adams.

Gibbs was surprised by the call and feels it has come about as a result of Scotland head coach - and Lions attack guru - Gregor Townsend's presence in the selection meeting.

"Gatland mentioned that he'd had an emotional week with the birth of his first child, that he got banged up last weekend," said Gibbs.

"But at the end of the day, there would be no better supplement for someone who has just celebrated the birth of their child than to make them proud of their dad.

"He's done nothing wrong, to not be in that side. I think he's also better in a defensive perspective because these are Test match conditions now, it's not all about production.

"He's definitely a player that has grown in that jersey and he must be bitterly disappointed.

"Duhan van der Merwe hasn't put a foot wrong. But I guess what you have to see is that this is the influence of Gregor Townsend on the selection."

The 58-cap centre also earmarked openside Tom Curry as the man who has the most pressure on him in the Lions side heading into the first Test on Saturday.

"Not that there is any doubt about Tom Curry's ability as a rugby player and a starter, but I think the pressure is one him.

"He is the out-and-out breakaway who can cause so much disruption at the breakdown. He has to be delivering three turnovers a half, at least.

"The great thing is you've got Watson, who I think is very similar but has a bit more football in him, that we would be a little more complimentary of in that first 40.

"Tom Curry would be my reliever.

"The onus will be on who dominates the breakdown and who wins the turnovers because once you get those, you create pressure by pegging the corners."
